International Mother Language Day 2024

On 21st February Omladinska organizacija Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) celebrated International Mother Language Day. First announced by the UNESCO Foundation over 20 years ago, Mother Language Day aims to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.

For our Mother Language Day activity, our team decided to create a poster showcasing different jobs written in English and B/H/S language. This activity aimed to create helpful associations and similarities between the languages through the medium of art, craft, and play.

The youngest participants began by colouring different people representing different occupations. After this we began the process of making the poster itself, using speech-bubble and writing all the words. The choice to use people and occupations, not only engaged the participants but allowed them to create positive associations between an occupation and language.

The team and the participants had so much fun during this activity, and the final poster was full of beautiful drawings.
