International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination with a workshop that was both informative and thought-provoking. A group of high school students explored the origins of this day, rooted in the 1960 Sharpeville massacre, where approximately 100 protesters lost their lives—an event that prompted the United Nations to strengthen global efforts in raising awareness and combating racial discrimination.

The workshop continued with a focused discussion on the ongoing relevance of this day, emphasizing the importance of actively opposing racism. Participants worked in small groups to create posters addressing ways to challenge discrimination and highlighting why it has no place in modern society.

Discussions also addressed contemporary issues, including movements such as Black Lives Matter, discrimination faced by Roma communities in the Balkans, and tensions between Turks and Kurds. Insights into the latter were shared by international volunteers from Turkey. The workshop concluded with participants presenting creative protest posters, each conveying a unified and powerful message: racism must be confronted in all its forms.
