My Weltwärts volunteering in Germany as a Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) volunteer – Teodora Luketa

I was volunteering for one year in the Friedenskreis’ office in Halle, Germany. Friedenskreis Halle is an NGO whose work is focused on peace education, peace policy, and peace services. I participated in all areas of their work and enjoyed learning from my colleagues committed to acting for a more equal and just society.

To mention only some of my activities – I developed and led the workshop at the preparatory seminar for the outgoing German volunteers, organised a discussion event and gave a lecture on the legacy of peace movements in post-Yugoslav countries, assisted the implementation of the various events on global justice and the educational workshops for high school students.

Together with my teammates, I wrote a cultural project aimed to support young people in their role in peacebuilding. Within this project, I learned a lot about how NGOs from different countries cooperate. At the same time, I utilized my knowledge of comparative literature acquired during my studies.

Volunteering was the opportunity to learn how the concepts of equality, civil rights, and peacebuilding can be applied in practice while helping others. It was an even more enriching learning experience because my colleagues and I spoke the same language of commitment, mutual respect, and solidarity. I’m very grateful for the dedication and great work of the Omladinska organizacija Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) in making this unique opportunity possible for the other young people and me.

Thank you so much!
