World Refugee Day
June 20th is International Day of Refugees, a day dedicated to recognizing the plight of refugees around the world and what we can do to help. The United Nations Refugee Report (UNHCR)’s latest data suggests that one out of every 113 people in the world is a refugee, asylum seeker or a displaced person in their own homeland.
Svitac (Firefly) held two workshops with children, one group aged 4-7 years and another the age of 8+, to commemorate the occasion. The 4 to 7 year-old group listened to a story read by our daily coordinator, adapted to the theme of the day and age of the participants – International Refugee Day. They then finished with a discussion about the story and came to the conclusion that all children in the world should have a home and no one has the right to expel them.
For the afternoon workshop for 8+ participants, the day-to-day coordinator, together with international and local volunteers, set up an interactive role-playing game where participants were led through a simulated journey of a refugee. At the end of the workshop discussion was held and participants shared their thoughts and feelings about the matter before writing and posting messages to displaced children in the world on a house-shaped poster.
