World Environment Day 2021

World Environment Day, also known as ‘Eco Day’, celebrated every year on 5th June and is one of the United Nations’ main tools for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of the environment.

At Svitac (Firefly Bosnia) we celebrated World Environment Day with two groups of participants. At the workshop for 16+ we made a print with leaves and in that way used materials from nature for creative expression. We also talked about the alarming ecological situation and ways to protect our natural resources.

With our younger group, we created an ‘Eco Caterpillar’ and discussed the natural foods they eat from leaves to vegetables. In each segment of the caterpillar, the participants drew items from several different topics we chatted about including technology, animals, friends and food. All of these rely on a healthy environment. Vegetables and fruits need healthy soil, water and climate.

At the end of the workshop, the participants took their caterpillars outside for a summer photoshoot. In sunny weather, we make the most of our environment and appreciate the grass to play on and trees to give us shade. Happy World Environment Day!
