World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development

In November 2001, the UNESCO General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity and proclaimed May 21, World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.

Culture encompasses a comprehensive way of life, a common system of values, tradition, art and beliefs. On this day there is an opportunity to expand knowledge of the value of cultural diversity and encourage a world of peace, dialogue and openness.

To celebrate the day, Youth Organization Svitac (Firefly) organized a workshop for 4-7 year olds on this topic together with international and local volunteers. The participants used water colors and templates to draw the shape of their hands on paper, then from these drawings they made a chain of paper as a symbol of communion. The first group also left prints of their hands on a big poster paper which the afternoon group painted, decorated and wrote messages of peace and communion on. Both groups had the opportunity to watch videos during their workshops (adjusted to their age) on the subject of cultural diversity and dialogue.
