World Book Day
World Book Day is celebrated on 23rd April around the world to promote books and foster the joy of reading for children and adults alike. UNESCO and other non-governmental organisations promote the importance of literacy, access to knowledge, and linguistic diversity in publishing and minority languages on this day, in addition to campaigning for intellectual property protection.
Svitac’s (Firefly in Bosnia’s) volunteer Orla from Scotland led the English club workshop on the topic of World Book Day. To start off the workshop she put together a quiz with a wide range of questions ranging from banned books to the history of World Book Day itself. It was a great success and everyone’s competitive spirit came out. After the winner was crowed, we spoke as a group about our favourite books and our personal experiences with reading. In the advanced English Club we took turns to convolutely explain the plot of a book while the group tried to guess the answer. The activity brought out everyone’s creative side and we all learned something new!
The workshops were held at the premises of the Youth centre.
Selected questions from the quiz:
‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ has been banned in a region of what country since 1931?
When was the printing press invented?
The world’s oldest library in continuous operation is located in what country?
