My volunteering at Svitac (Firefly) – Merve Güçlü, Turkey

My volunteering at Svitac (Firefly) began in the beginning of July, just after I finished a degree in International Relations. I was interested in exploring new countries and cultures, and Brčko District was a great opportunity to pursue this interest. This was the first time that I had been out of my home country alone, and I did not know what to expect. However, from the start any fears I had quickly evaporated. I felt incredibly welcomed by local and international volunteers. They were a family that I became part of.

During my volunteering at Svitac (Firefly), I was involved in all daily activities with young children (age 4-7), children (age 8+) and young adults (16+). I held a weekly evening Turkish language workshop and as part of this project I coordinated a cultural night that focused on Turkey I also took part in Svitac’s (Firefly’s) annual events which included a Summer Camp, Halloween Party and New Year’s Party, etc. I also supported workshops that were prepared and implemented by other volunteers.

During my six months in Brčko, I had the opportunity to engage with young people and to form connections even though we do not speak the same language. I also travelled around Bosnia and Herzegovina. I improved my English, gained new skills and knowledge and made friends from across Europe, who came from different cultures and backgrounds. I will take all that I have learned from this small community and will apply it in the future.

I am so thankful to Svitac (Firefly) for giving me these opportunities and experiences. I will never forget my time here. I hope we can meet again.

See you soon!
