My volunteering at Svitac – Anne Bonitz

“Living in Bosnia was my wish since I came here for the first time in 2015 and got to know a couple of very motivated, interesting and inspiring people. I felt I already knew a lot about the history and the culture, but not how I feel part of the local community. People have been so welcoming, open and have tried hard to make me feel safe, comfortable and simply in the right place. As a consequence of the great spirit, organization and teamwork of Svitac, I felt like a member of the organization from the very first week. From the beginning I was given a variety of opportunities to work and experiment on in order to find out what my skills were and what I could contribute to the organization. I did drama with children and young adults, German lessons with children and adults, several creative and games workshops and French workshops for adults. I also learned how to make ‘pita’ (Bosnian pie), how to enjoy a Bosnian coffee properly and that, when things are going “polako” (slowly), they sometimes work better. To conclude, it was a great year filled with new experiences, a diverse team of international people, learning a new language and work experience with people of all ages. I hope I could give something back as well. I am glad I came and I am sure I will come back. Vidimo se!”
