THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF LIVING TOGETHER IN PEACE

The UN General – Assembly, in its resolution 72/130, declared 16th May the International Day of Living Together in Peace, as a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity.

Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) has celebrated this day with the youngest participants discussing the importance of respecting each other. The aim was also to learn the values of living in peace from an early age. The participants watched an educational video and made symbolic hearths with written words such as Love, Peace, and Tolerance.

Asking children and young people simple questions about peace and kindness cannot only make them more self-aware, but it will also get them thinking about the importance of being a kind and genuine peacekeeper year-round. To begin, we all should ask ourselves what peace and kindness means to us.
The discussion with participants 15+ was held in English. Besides improving their speaking skills the group talked about the importance of mutual understanding, appreciating peace, and enjoying having diversity in their daily lives! This was also the perfect opportunity to meet young people from Germany, Macedonia, Belgium, Scotland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina with different ethnicities! Living together in peace requires inclusive approaches to building peace. By encouraging dialogue, promoting mutual understanding, and fostering cooperation, we can create a more peaceful and harmonious world for all.

The workshops were held at the premises of the Youth centre in Brčko District BiH.
