Mother Language Day 2025
On February 21st, Omladinska organizacija Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) celebrated International Mother Language Day. Established by the UNESCO Foundation over 20 years ago, this day aims to raise awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity while promoting multilingualism.
For our Mother Language Day activity, our team created a poster featuring a tree with apples. Each apple had the word “family member” written in B/H/S, English, and German. The activity was designed to foster connections and similarities between languages through art, craft, and play.
The youngest participants began by colouring the apples and tree, while the rest of the team assisted with writing the words in various languages. Once the apples were ready, we began assembling the poster. The choice of using fruits and family members not only engaged the participants but also encouraged positive associations between language and family.
