Mother Language Day

On 21st February 1999, UNESCO declared Mother Language Day.

Svitac (Firefly Bosnia) celebrated this date with two activities. Participants aged 4-6 were taught how to say ‘love’ in Spanish, German, English, Turkish and Hungarian, and after the discussion adjusted to their age about different languages in the world, they dyed the worksheet.

Participants aged 15+ also discussed the importance of preserving their own mother language and different languages in the world and were learning how to say hello in multiple languages. They also had the opportunity to watch a video about the importance and nurture of language, and then work in small groups and write pro-and-counter arguments to the question of whether it would be better for all people in the world to speak only one language.

The workshops were held in the premises of the Youth Centre.
