International Day of Families
The International Day of Families is celebrated in honor of the whole family every year. This special day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2012.
For this year’s International Day of Families, Svitac (Firefly) created together with international and local volunteers a workshop for participants’ age 4-7 years. The workshop had participants create a model of a family house and draw their family inside. English words on the topic of family, such as the phrase “this is my family,” were included in the children’s cards. Twenty-two children participated in this workshop.
Svitac (Firefly) celebrated the International Day of Families with the afternoon class as well. On paper participants created silhouettes of their families under an umbrella before melting crayons onto their drawings, creating an effect of rain in rainbow colors. This group learned English words related to family, such as aunt, cousin, mother, and father. Five children participated in this workshop.
