International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2025
March 21st is recognized globally as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. To mark this occasion, Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) organized a workshop with high and primary school students. Ada, Paula, and Pia, international volunteers from Germany, led a presentation, quiz, and discussion session.
The group spoke about a situation on a normal school day; a new student approached a group of young people and spoke with an accent. The group laughed and made comments saying “He’s definitely not from here.” No one intervened. The boy was feeling sad, walked away, and the situation was quickly forgotten by everyone else. Most racist incidents are not necessarily direct insults, threats, or physical attacks; they are often a more subtle form of racism, known as everyday racism. Everyday racism is widespread and, as the name suggests, occurs in everyday situations. It is often hard to recognize but can be deeply hurtful to those affected.
After the discussion, the group of students took part in a quiz on racism and collaborated to create a poster featuring keywords and symbolic messages. The goal of the workshop was to encourage young people to raise awareness, promote dialogue on racism and discrimination, share their personal experiences, and reflect on the presence of racism in their community.
