Human Rights Day 2023
Human Rights Day is observed annually on 10th December. It celebrates the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
To honour this, Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) held activities about Human Rights Day with the regular participants. With the youngest, we read the fable “A Fox and the Stork”. The lesson of the story is: “Do not play tricks on your friends unless you can stand the same treatment yourself”. The volunteers made a New Year’s tree and decorations, on which we wrote some of the basic human rights, such as freedom, peace, justice, life, and equality. Jonathan spoke with the older participants on this topic and discussed the fundamental values.
The principles declared in 1948 are as relevant today as they were when they were established. Awareness of our rights allows us to stand up for those of others; by educating people about their rights, we work towards a society built on empowerment.
