Human Rights Day 2021

Human Rights Day is observed annually on 10th December. It celebrates the adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

To honour this, Svitac (Firefly Bosnia) held a workshop for children to learn and understand the rights they hold. It began with a video presentation discussing their rights. This knowledge was then used to complete a passport-style activity. Here, the participants were given a ‘My Rights Passport’ (Moj Pasoš Ljudskih Prava) to fill with drawings that reflect their rights as children. Education, healthcare, family and equality were all aspects of the Universal Declaration which were explored during the workshop. At the end of this activity, the children took their completed passports to be stamped. The stamp confirmed that they understood their rights.

The principles declared in 1948 are as relevant today as they were when they were established. Awareness of our rights allows us to stand up for those of others; by educating people about their rights, we work towards a society built on empowerment.
