European Day of Languages 2023
European Day of Languages is an initiative to promote language learning, launched by the Council of Europe in 2001 in cooperation with the European Commission. Since then, this day has been celebrated throughout Europe every year on September 26th.
Svitac (Firefly in Bosnia) symbolically celebrated this day! We created a beautiful tree with our youngest participants and wrote the word “happiness” in more than 25 languages! Our international and local volunteers helped also with learning 10 words in English – big/small, quiet/loud, slow/fast, young/old, day/night. This workshop was a lot of fun for our youngest – they liked decorating the “Tree of Happiness” and cutting out the word clouds.
International volunteers Yasmine, Noama, Simon, and Jonathan were also invited to the gymnasium for a presentation on languages, prepared by the students.
“A language is not just words. It’s a culture, a tradition, a unification of a community, a whole history that creates what a community is. It’s all embodied in a language.”
