Anti-Fascism Day 2018

Like every year, Omladinska organizacija Svitac (Firefly) celebrated the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism on the 9th of November. The day consisted of activities for three different age groups, divided into morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.

The morning group was attended by participants aged 4-7 who where shown a puppet theatre about discrimination and racism adjusted to their age. Afterwards there was a short discussion with the children about what they saw and how they understood it. The goal was to teach them that discrimination and racism is a bad thing.

In the afternoon, participants aged 8-15 attended a workshop in which they were shown a fragment from the film ‘Don’t be a sucker’. After seeing the fragment, the attendees discussed the topic of Fascism, and how Fascists try to divide different groups in society. The participants discussed the best way to deal with Fascism, and how they can take responsibility in their everyday life to not allow Fascism from ever taking the upper hand. The workshop ended with arts & crafts, where the participants created the Anti-Fascist Action logo.

The age 16+ session was split up in two parts, the first of which was the recording of a cover of the anti-fascist song ‘Bella Ciao’. The second part was an anti-fascist movie night, which started with the first screening of the ‘Bella Ciao’ cover. During the movie night participants were shown the films ‘Walt Disney’s Education of Death’ and ‘Don’t be a sucker’. Both movies were made during the Second World War to educate the viewer about the origins and dangers of Fascism. After each movie there was room for discussion, and the participants got a chance to explain their views on the topic. During the discussions the topic of the movies was related to events these days, and how to prevent Fascism from rising again.

The Day against Fascism and Antisemitism was attended by around 50 participants and was made possible with the help of the local and international volunteers of Svitac (Firefly).
