We are Different – We are the Same
Once again this year we participated in and organised an Antifascism day on 4th November 2014. This year we held Anti-fascism day in Vidovice under the motto “We are different – we are the same”.
To start we explained to the kids what fascism and prejudices means. Then we played different games with them. The first game was about differences and similarities. Everyone sat in a circle and one kid in the middle. That kid had to take a sheet of paper out of a box. On these sheets were written different questions. If this question was true for the kids, they had to stand up to find a new seat. If not, they kept their existing seat.
In the Box were ten questions: five where every kid had to stand up (i.e. “Who has two ears?”) and five where only some kids had to find a new seat (i.e. “Do you like football?”). In this way the kids saw on which points we are different and on which we are similar.
The second game was about stereotypes. We placed four pictures of different people in the middle of a circle of eight characteristics. To each person belonged one characteristic. The kids had to find out which characteristics belonged to which person. The point of these games were that they expected that certain characteristics belonged to certain people, based on their prejudices, only to find out they were wrong. For instance, a man with a lot of tattoos was not a tattoo-maker, but a doctor. In this way they realised through this game that prejudices are often wrong.
At the end we made a big poster. The kids had to draw out different faces, cut the faces into 4 “slices”, mix those slices up, and then create new faces out of them. The new faces looked very strange owing to the different paint on each slice. After that we put all the faces on the poster.
All in all it was a lot of fun for the kids, which hopefully will change their perceptions about people in the future, in the process disarming future biases and prejudices.
